With school starting up in August, are you finding yourself overwhelmed with the transition? It is common for parents to be inundated with tasks in August – school supply shopping, wrapping up the final items from your summer bucket list – and it can be easier than usual to miss out on some important items that should be checked off your to-do list.
This year, make a commitment to starting off your Back To School season with dental health as a priority. It’s easier than you think and your kids, no matter the age, will benefit from the healthy focus for years to come. Practice makes perfect, and good dental habits can make your transition a healthy one.
First things first – are your children up to date on their dental check-ups? These important dental visits should happen every 6 months; your insurance company pays for two every year, so don’t miss out on the chance to secure your check-up if you are overdue.
While you are hitting the stores with your kids choosing backpacks, folders, and other Back to School items, hit the dental aisle as well. Now is the time to let your kids pick out new toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss. Everything feels a bit more exciting when it is new, and you can capitalize on those eager tendencies to make dental health a bit more fun. Even better, it is recommended to replace your toothbrush at least every three months – now is the perfect time for a clean start.
While you and your kiddos get back in the swing of packing school lunches, be sure you are reaching for healthy foods to add to the lunchbox. Your teeth are healthier when you choose water over juice or soda, as well as when you opt for fruits and veggies instead of sugary snacks. Make wise decisions now, and it will be easier to keep up the habit throughout the year.
The lazy days of summer can sometimes bring plenty of habits that haven’t exactly happened consistently when school was out of session. Use the energy from this transition time of year to bring good dental habits back into focus. Brush your teeth at least twice per day and floss daily; set a good example by having good dental habits yourself and be sure your kids are following the recommendations as well.
Have an excellent school year! If you are looking to set up your next dental check-up, or if you have dental concerns or questions, give the Stone Dental team a call. We are happy to help patients of all ages and stages!
