Dental Sedation for Children

Posted by STONE DENTAL GROUP on Dec 7 2021, 07:10 AM

Fear of dental procedures and visits to the dentist is common in people of all ages. Children with severe dental phobia have trouble keeping still, and that makes it particularly difficult for them to get dental treatments and procedures done.

Sedation dentistry is the best possible solution to resolve this issue. Our experienced team at Stone Dental Group – SE Chicago Dentistry in Chicago, Illinois, is compassionate and gentle and can help children get the care and treatment they need in a relaxed environment.

Different Types of Sedation for Children

  • Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, also called laughing gas, is the least invasive and easiest solution for kids who require dental sedation. A mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen is administered to children during the procedure through a mask. It makes them relaxed, calm, and euphoric. The effect of the gas wears off quickly and also dulls any discomfort.

  • Oral Sedation

This type of sedation involves taking medication orally. Children might feel sleepy under oral sedation but they’ll be able to move and respond to the dentist's instructions. Oral sedation is generally preferred for older children and adults.

  • General Anesthesia

When a treatment cannot be done with the child being awake, general anesthesia is used. It is administered by specially trained staff who monitor the child during the entire procedure. Under general anesthesia, children are unconscious and the procedure is pain-free.

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe for Children?

In the hands of an experienced and skilled dentist, sedation dentistry is safe for children. Before the procedure, the dentist will check your child’s medical history and any medications they might be taking. The type and level of sedation will be determined based on their specific needs and history.

Laughing gas is one of the best types of sedation for children and it is also recognized by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry as a safe and effective way of reducing anxiety.

In cases of severe infections or tooth decay, the pain and effect of the treatment can be overwhelming. In such situations, general anesthesia is considered the safest option.

The dentist will give you a list of detailed instructions regarding what to do before the procedure to make it as safe as possible. Talking to your child and explaining the procedure will make it easier for them to adjust.
