What You Should Know About Teeth Grinding

Are you grinding your teeth? Nearly 80% of teeth grinding occurs during sleep. It is usually associated with stress and anxiety. Bruxism, also called teeth grinding, is a condition in which your grind, gnash or clench teeth. Typically those who do have bruxism clench their together during the day or clench and grind at night (during sleep). Sleep bruxism is considered a sleep-related disorder. People who grind their teeth at night are more likely to have other sleep disorders.

Signs and Symptoms for Bruxism

  • Teeth grinding or clenching
  • Flattened, fractured, chipped, or loose teeth
  • Jaw or face pain or soreness
  • Worn tooth enamel, exposing deeper layers of your tooth
  • Increased sensitivity in teeth
  • Dull headache in the temples
  • Damage from chewing on the inside of your cheek
  • Tired or tight jaw muscles
  • Indentations on your tongue

Treatment For Bruxism

If you have a mild case of bruxism, not treatment is necessary. However, severe cases can lead to jaw disorders, migraines, damaged teeth, and other health problems imp source. It is important to know the signs and symptoms and seek proper dental care. You should receive treatment from your dentist if the following is occurring:

  • Your teeth are worn, damaged or sensitive
  • You have pain in your jaw, ears, and face
  • Others are complaining over your grinding noises while you sleep
  • You are experiencing a locked jaw
